William Wilberforce led the political battle to abolish slavery and its trade throughout the British Empire. Wilberforce also believed in reforming greater society as well. His good works included lending his assistance to hospitals and prisons, preventing cruelty to animals and promoting positive reform in India and other colonies. He also founded what we know today as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
John Newton began his seafaring when he was forced to join the Royal Navy at the young age of 11. After discharge from the Royal Navy, he joined Britain’s prosperous slave trade until a near-death experience in Sierra Leone changed his life forever. As a result, he left the slave trade and converted to Christianity in 1748. Later, he was ordained as a priest at Olney Parish Church. It was this great change in his life that inspired him to write the lyrics to Amazing Grace in 1772. Upon reflection, Newton declared that, "only God's amazing grace could and would take a rude, profane, slave-trading sailor and transform him into a child of God."
Many people find it hard to believe that slavery still exists. Whether it's bonded slavery with men, women and children toiling on plantations, in rice mills, brick kilns and many other industries; or, the deplorable and prevalent trade in humans to serve as sex slaves, slavery is flourishing in many parts of the world. It is still every bit as ugly as it was 200 years ago and it must end.
